ETSU shows fight but Commodores display their potential

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Dec. 3, 2013) – Junior forward Serena Clark (Stone Mountain, Ga.) notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds but 42 points in the paint and continuous answers to ETSU advances from the Vanderbilt Commodores proved to be too much as Vandy defeated the Bucs, 92-71, on Tuesday evening inside Memorial Gymnasium.

With the loss ETSU drops to 2-5 overall, while Vanderbilt improves to 7-2 on the season.

In ETSU’s third game in five days, the Bucs got out to a fast start in the early going. After struggling from the field against Western Carolina, the Blue and Gold finally began to knock down some shots on open looks off of great ball movement. ETSU was able to take a 22-20 advantage on a Clark lay-in off of a Chandler Christopher (Greenville, Tenn.) dish with seven minutes left in the first half. After the Bucs pushed the lead to four, Vanderbilt answered back with an 8-2 run to take a 28-24 advantage with 3:33 to go in the period. ETSU stayed cold for the duration of the half while the Commodores increased their lead to 34-27 at the break.

A Vanderbilt corner three on the first possession of the second half set the Bucs back early but ETSU continued to fight and got within five points minutes later on a Christopher trifecta with 18:37 to go. The Commodores responded over the next seven minutes by going on a 25-9 run to take control of the game, 62-41, with 10:53 remaining. Facing a big deficit, the Bucs did not quit but each ETSU advance was met with an answer by VU to keep the ‘Dores in the driver’s seat. The Blue and Gold was able to execute some offense late but mounting foul trouble allowed Vandy to widen the lead at the line resulting in a 92-71 ETSU defeat.

Jasmine Lister registered a game-high 26 points and seven assists for Vanderbilt which also featured three additional double-figure scorers. Meanwhile, Clark’s fifth double-double of 2013-14 was joined by 16 points from Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) and 11 points from both Cara Bowling (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and Shamauria Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) for ETSU.

The Commodores shot a solid 51 percent from the floor and also converted 29-of-38 free throws. In addition to doing damage at the charity stripe, Vandy also made ETSU pay with 42 points in the paint.

After starting the game hot from the field, the Blue and Gold cooled down tremendously facing VU’s zone defense. For the game, the Bucs shot 41 percent from the floor and continued to struggle from downtown with only 8-of-25 makes. ETSU also shot considerably less free throws than the Commodores, making 13-0f-19 at the line. In total, the Bucs were outrebounded by two (38-36) but did gather two more offensive rebounds (12-10) against Vandy’s imposing front line and turned these second chances into 16 points.

The Bucs will have a long layoff before returning to action on Dec. 15 to face the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, Ky. at 2 p.m.
