ETSU dominates series all-time versus UNCA, 16-1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 13, 2014) – The ETSU women’s basketball team will begin the 2014-15 regular season on the road on Friday when it matches up with the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at 7 p.m. inside Kimmel Arena.

After a pair of wins in exhibition play against area schools, the Bucs will kickoff the regular season at the site of the 2014 SoCon Women’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals in March. The “Asheville to Asheville” journey will start with a matchup against the Bulldogs who finished 11-20 overall last season. UNCA returns seven upperclassmen from a year ago including senior guard Shonese Jones -- who averaged a team-leading 10.4 points per game -- and junior guard Paige Love -- who was recently named to the Big South Preseason All-Conference Second Team.

ETSU will counter with a veteran-laden squad featuring five players who started 15 or more games a year ago. The Bucs’ strength will be their front line where they boast four seniors; highlighted by Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) who missed the entirety of last season due to an injury suffered in the first game of the year and is just seven points away from becoming the 21st member of ETSU women’s basketball 1,000-point club. The Blue & Gold also sports the luxury of having 2014 preseason All-Southern Conference selection senior forward Serena Clark (Stone Mountain, Ga.) in the post who averaged a team leading 10.6 points and 10.0 rebounds last season.

The Bucs have already let their presence be known down low this season with the team averaging 53 points in the paint in their two exhibition contests. In addition, ETSU has gotten an extra boost inside with newcomer Shomari Kendrick (Lexington, Ky.) posting an average of 13.5 points and 11 rebounds a game in exhibition play. Getting some production from its guard play will be critical moving forward and early indications are encouraging with freshman point guard Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) adjusting well to the college game with 12 points and 7.5 rebounds per game and a solid 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in the two exhibition matchups.

ETSU and UNCA will square off on Friday in the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams; a series that the Bucs dominate -- 16-1 -- and have won the previous two meetings. In the programs’ last meeting on Dec. 1, 2007 in Johnson City, the Blue & Gold came away victorious – 72-53.
