JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (November 10, 2016) – The 2016-17 campaign begins on the road for ETSU women’s basketball as the Buccaneers travel to Big East opponent Butler on Friday, November 11 for their season opener.

ETSU will return eight players from last season’s squad along with five newcomers. Last season the Bucs finished 16-14 and 8-6 in Southern Conference play en route to finishing fourth in the conference.
Bridges, Tarter named Preseason All-SoCon; ETSU picked Fourth
Senior Shamauria Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) and junior Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) earned 2016 Preseason All-SoCon honors while ETSU was picked to finish fourth by the leagues media and coaches’. Bridges last season led the SoCon last season with 76 threes which was fifth most in a single-season at ETSU. Tarter led the Bucs with 17 points per game.
What a Schedule
The Bucs have one of the most daunting schedules in school history in 2016 with 15 home games, highlighted by hosting Appalachian State, Old Dominion, Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee. It’s the first time since 1981 the Lady Vols are making the trip to Johnson City.
Tarter Closing in on 1,000
Tianna Tarter will look to become the 23rd member of ETSU’s 1,000-point club this season as the junior guard from Johnson City is just 272 points away from reaching 1,000. In her first two seasons as a Buc, Tarter has registered 379 and 374 points.
Score First, Get to 60
Last season when scoring the first basket of the game ETSU was 10-1 compared to 7-12 when the opponent scores first. Also when the Bucs scored at least 60 points a year ago, they had a record of 13-2.
With freshman Kelci and Kayla Marosites on the 2016-17 roster, ETSU is one of only 17 teams in NCAA Division I to have a set of sisters on the roster. Of those 17 teams, ETSU is one of only 10 teams in NCAA Division I to have twin sisters.
Scouting the Butler Bulldogs
This will be the first ever meeting between ETSU and Butler as the Bulldogs finished last season with an overall record of 10-21 and 4-14 in Big East play. The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth out of ten teams in the Preseason Big East coaches’ poll. Butler is led by sophomore Tori Schickel who as a freshman recorded 11.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
