JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 4, 2017) – The ETSU women’s basketball team begins Southern Conference play on Thursday as the Buccaneers take on league-leader Mercer at 5:00 p.m. in Macon, Ga. It’s the first of three straight road games to begin SoCon play for the Bucs.

Scouting the Buccaneers
Ringing in the New Year the Bucs have an overall record of 8-7 and have posted back-to-back victories over Coppin State and Old Dominion. In ETSU’s last contests, the blue and gold scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to clinch a 70-60 victory over the Lady Monarchs.
Tianna Tarter named SoCon Player of the Week
For the weeks of Dec.20 – Jan.2, junior Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) was named SoCon Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points, six rebounds and six assists in two games played. It’s the fourth time this season, Tarter has earned POTW honors.
Free For a Reason
ETSU is one of the best teams in the country in getting to the free-throw line as the Bucs rank 7th in the NCAA with 326 free-throw attempts.
The Bucs have been dominant when scoring at least 70 points the past two seasons. ETSU has boasted an overall record of 14-3 the past two years when reaching the 70-point plateau.
Buccaneer Block Party
Against Old Dominion, the Bucs protected the rim as the team recorded a season-high nine blocks. Sophomore Sadasia Tipps (Hickory, N.C.) tied a career-high with three blocks while senior Yamile Rodriguez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) also recorded three blocks. Overall, ETSU has five different players register at least one block.

January 5th has been a successful day over the years for ETSU as the blue and gold have an overall record of 12-3. On Jan.5, the Bucs have won six straight contests.
Tops in the SoCon
Heading into conference play, ETSU is one of only three teams to have two players ranked in the top ten in scoring. Senior Shamauria Bridges (Miramar, Fla.) ranks eighth in the league 13.5 points per game while Tarter leads the SoCon with 20.5 points per game.
Scouting the Mercer Bears
Mercer heads into SoCon play with an overall record of 11-3 and leading the Southern Conference. The Bears are on a two-game winning streak defeating Davidson and Paine en route to being ranked 13th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Mercer is led by reigning SoCon Player of the Year Kahlia Lawrence who ranks third in the SoCon with 17.3 points per game.
