SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Dec. 5, 2017) – Freshman guard Erica Haynes-Overton (Nashville, Tenn.) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Haynes-Overton finished the week averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in the Bucs’ two wins at Murray State and Winthrop and finished a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe as ETSU improved to 6-4.
Against Murray State, Haynes-Overton dropped 19 points while shooting a sizzling 57 percent from the floor. In her 33 minutes of action, the rookie also set a new single-game program record as she recorded 11 steals, bettering the previous mark of nine set back in 2006, marking the first double-double of Haynes-Overton’s career. The Nashville, Tennessee, native finished just two rebounds shy of a triple-double and also added two assists and one block.
In a 74-63 win over Winthrop, Haynes-Overton poured in 16 points and grabbed four rebounds despite getting into foul trouble early in the game. The 5-5 guard added to her SoCon-leading steals total with four more against the Eagles, giving her 40 for the year.
Haynes-Overton shot 48 percent from the floor and 33 percent from beyond the arc in the two contests, while averaging 7.5 steals per game.
The freshman ranks in the top 15 of five different SoCon statistical categories and her 11 steals is tied for the most in a single game in Division I this season. Haynes-Overton also ranks second in the NCAA in total steals.
Haynes-Overton and the rest of the Bucs will continue their travel schedule with a non-conference game on Sunday, Dec. 10 at the University of Houston.
