Scouting the Buccaneers
ETSU comes into Thursday’s game at 12-8 overall and 5-0 in the conference. The backcourt duo of Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Erica Haynes-Overton (Nashville, Tenn.) have been tremendous for the Bucs. Haynes-Overton was named the College Sports Madness player of the Week for her performances on the road last week. The Bucs have truly been playing like a team and feed off of each other. Raven Dean (Charlotte, N.C.), Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas), Britney Snowden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Sadasia Tipps (Hickory, N.C.) have been key players in the paint. Shy Copney (Johnson City, Tenn.), Anajae Stephney (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Alayjah Sherer (Tupelo, Miss.) continue to come off the bench strong and provide depth when needed.
ETSU is one of five programs in the nation with both undefeated men’s and women’s basketball teams.
60 Wins the Balance
In conference action, ETSU has gone 5-0 when scoring 60 or more points. They have also gone 5-0 when they have limited their opponents to scoring under 60 points.
Freshman Erica Haynes-Overton is ranked third in the nation in steals. She’s also first in the SoCon in steals.
A win on Thursday would tie the Bucs’ longest conference start since 2014-15, when they began the conference season going 6-0.
200th Career Wins
Coach Ezell is just six wins away from notching her 200th career win.
ETSU has six players who have scored more than 100 total points this season; Dean, Tarter, Haynes-Overton, Snowden, Sherer and Copney.
Spreading the Wealth
All ten players have scored 50 or more total points this season.
This is the 35th meeting in program history, as the Bucs hold an 18-16 all-time record over the Bears. Mercer has won the last three contests.
Mercer comes to Johnson City with an 18-2 overall record and a 15-game win streak, including their five wins in the conference. They have won by double figures in their last 13 games. In conference only stats, the Bears lead the conference in 11 different categories. The Bears are led by Kahlia Lawrence and KeKe Calloway who average in double figures. Both will be a threat from beyond the arc and can steal the ball quite well. In the paint, Amanda Thompson is Mercer’s strongest rebounder, averaging 6.8 per game.
