The Bucs won both games this season against Wofford

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 28, 2018) – The quest for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament begins for the ETSU women’s basketball team on Thursday.  The Buccaneers head to the 2018 Southern Conference Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will square off with the No. 7 seed Wofford. Tip-off is set for March 1 at 3:30 p.m. inside the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.

Scouting the Buccaneers

ETSU is having one of their most successful seasons under the helm of head coach Brittney Ezell. The Bucs finished with an 18-11 record and an 11-3 record in the SoCon helping Coach Ezell earn her 200th career win. Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) has led the Bucs all season, currently averaging 17.9 points per game. The Bucs have a +3.3 scoring margin and +4.9 turnover margin. Throughout the season the Bucs have averaged .386 field goal percentage, knocking down 140 threes and grabbing 332 steals, leading the SoCon and being ranked fifth in the nation in the steal category.

Bucs Garner SoCon Postseason Awards

It was a big day for ETSU women’s basketball, as SoCon Postseason awards came out. Freshman Erica Haynes-Overton (Nashville, Tenn.) was recognized by the league and media four times. She was named the Freshman Player of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year, named to the Second Team All-SoCon and named to the All-Freshman Team. Tianna Tarter was named to the First Team All-SoCon for the third straight year and Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) was the recipient of the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award.

Record at the No. 2 Seed

The Bucs hold a 2-2 record when being the No. 2 in conference tournaments. The last time they were the No. 2 seed was during the 2014-15 season.

What Lies Ahead

With a victory on Thursday, the Bucs will face the winner of No. 3 Chattanooga and No. 6 UNCG. This semifinal game is set for Friday, March 2 at 1:15 p.m.

Series History

This will be the 26th meeting between ETSU and Wofford. ETSU wins the all-time series 22-3, sweeping Wofford in the regular season. It will be the first time both teams will square off in the SoCon Tournament.

Scouting the Wofford Terriers

The Terriers enter tomorrow’s match with a 10-18 overall record and a 3-11 record in SoCon. Their conference wins came from Samford, Western Carolina and Furman. The Terriers are led by freshman De’Ja Green, who has started in all 29 games while averaging 12.6 points per game. Green and Anna Claire Atha each have made 25 three-pointers with senior Emily Ryan leading the squad with 49. Cairo Booker is another offensive force for the Terriers, also averaging in double figures with 10.9 points per game.
