ASHEVILLE, N.C. (March 3, 2018) – The top two teams in the Southern Conference will square off on Sunday, March 4 at noon. The No. 2 seed ETSU women’s basketball team faces the No. 1 Mercer Bears in the SoCon Championship final inside the U.S. Cellular Center. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
The winner of the contest takes the 2018 SoCon Championship title and receives an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. A victory would mark ETSU’s fifth all-time NCAA tournament appearance and first since 2010. In addition, the Bucs are seeking their first-ever SoCon Tournament title in program history.
This will be the 37th meeting in program history. The all-time series is tied 18-18. Mercer has won the last five contests, including the last two regular season games.
Last Time Out
ETSU grinded out a 54-52 victory over the No. 6 seed UNCG Spartans on Friday afternoon in the SoCon Championship semifinals. Tianna Tarter (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Erica Haynes-Overton (Nashville, Tenn.) combined for 33 points of ETSU’s 54. Tarter scored the game high of 17 points, while Haynes-Overton recorded a new career-high of three three-pointers in single game.
Bucs at a Glance
This is ETSU’s first 20-win season since 2014-15 when they finished 21-12. This season the Bucs are currently 20-11. They are continuously led by Tianna Tarter and Erica Haynes-Overton who average double figures. Britney Snowden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Raven Dean (Charlotte, N.C.) have been tremendous for ETSU in the paint grabbing rebounds and putting up points. ETSU has a +3.6 scoring margin ad a +5.0 turnover margin. The Bucs are ranked first in the SoCon and eighth in the nation in steals.
Mercer at a Glance
The undefeated Mercer Bears are led by the SoCon Player of the Year, Kahlia Lawrence. Lawrence averages 18.8 points per game, while KeKe Calloway averages 17.1 points per game and has 93 three-pointers on the season. Lawrence, Calloway, and Sydni Means all earned First Team All-SoCon honors, with their head coach, Susie Gardner garnering Coach of the Year. Mercer has only lost two games all season and have a 25-game winning streak going.
Three Bucs earn SoCon Postseason Awards
Tianna Tarter was named First Team All-SoCon for the third straight season. Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) received the Ann Lashley Inspiration Award. Erica Haynes-Overton was named Second Team All-Conference, named to the All-Freshman Team and was named the Defensive Player of the Year and the Freshman of the Year.
