CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Feb. 27, 2019) – The ETSU women’s basketball team will conclude the regular season on the road, with games against Western Carolina and UNCG. Up first for the Bucs is Western Carolina on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Ramsey Center.


ETSU comes into Thursday’s game with an 8-20 overall record and are 6-6 in the conference. The Bucs are averaging 67.6 points per game, ranking third in the SoCon. ETSU is fourth in offensive rebounds (12.5) and second in defensive rebounds (25.3). The Bucs are also second in blocks shots and first in steals. 

Erica Haynes-Overton (Nashville, Tenn.) has led the Bucs throughout the season in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game, ranking fifth in the SoCon. Micah Scheetz (Knoxville, Tenn.) also averages in double figures, ranking 13th with 10.3 points per game. She ranks second on the team in three-point field goals made, right behind Carley Lytton (Floyd, Va.) who leads the team with 35. Britney Snowden (Pensacola, Fla.) has been a force to be reckon with in the paint, as she leads the Bucs with 5.9 rebounds per game. She also averages 8.9 points and has scored in double figures in the last four games.


Western Carolina has a 4-23 overall record and are 0-12 in the conference. They have won three of their games on their home court inside the Ramsey Center. The Catamounts are third in the conference in three-point field goals made, averaging 6.1 per game. They are also third in defensive rebounds, averaging 25.1.

The Catamounts are led by freshman Jewell Smalls who is currently averaging 10.7 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game. Last time against the Bucs, Smalls scored a game-high 32 points. Smalls also ranks seventh in the conference in scoring. Judith Martin Ruiz and Angel Allen join Smalls in scoring. Ruiz averages 8.9 points, ranking 19th and Allen averages 7.9 points, ranking 26th. Ruiz had a double-double against the Bucs last time, scoring 13 points and collecting ten rebounds.  


Saturday’s game will be the 75th all-time meeting. ETSU has a 52-22 record against Western Carolina and the Bucs have won the last ten contests.


The last time both teams met was on Feb. 2, 2018 in Johnson City, Tenn. ETSU won in a thrilling 88-80 overtime win. Haynes-Overton has a standout game, scoring 31 points, shooting 50 percent from the field and went 11-12 at the free throw line. Scheetz and Upton each scored in double figures as well.
