DeShawne Blocker

DeShawne Blocker, one of ETSU's all-time greats, joins Karen Kemp's staff for the seventh season and her fourth as an Associate Head Coach. Blocker is the Lady Bucs' recruiting coordinator and works with the post players.

Since her arrival in 2006, Blocker has helped coach ETSU to the post-season four consecutive seasons, including three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. Part of the reason for the great success deals with Blocker's tremendous job with her post players. Blocker helped coach Latisha Belcher to back-to-back Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team accolades, including All-Tournament MVP honors in 2008. Meanwhile, in 2009, Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-Conference honors. In addition to Belcher, Blocker also guided Michele DeVault to All-Atlantic Sun honors and Gwen Washington to the All-Freshman Team.

During Blocker's career at ETSU she was a talented scorer and rebounder, and the talent quickly rubbed off on the Lady Buccaneer players in her first two seasons on the sidelines. Last season, ETSU set new single season records in points scored (2,478) and rebounds (1,360), both of which were previously held by teams Blocker played on.

"DeShawne has been a huge asset to my staff over the previous four seasons," commented Kemp. "I had the honor to coach her in 1994-95. She was a big part of our success then, and she has been an important piece to our success now."

Blocker was a four-year letterwinner at ETSU, where she was able to earn a place in the NCAA record books. She led the NCAA during the 1993-94 campaign in both rebounds for a season (450) and rebounds per game (17.3). Blocker, the third-highest scorer in ETSU history with 2,086 points, posted the highest rebounding game in the NCAA during both the 1993 and 1994 seasons, with 25 and 28 boards. Her 28 rebounds against Covenant is still the greatest rebounding performance in Lady Buccaneer history.

She was a two-time SoCon Player of the Year, and was also tabbed SoCon Freshman of the Year in 1992, as well as SoCon Tournament MVP and SoCon Female Athlete of the Year in 1995. Blocker was named First Team All-Conference from 1992-95, and was listed as one of the candidates for the Ban/Naismith Player-of-the-Year award during her 1994 season.

One of the most heralded players in Lady Buc history, Blocker was a U.S. Basketball Association honorable mention All-American in 1994 and 1995. She also spent three years playing professionally in Spain, Greece, Austria and Finland. Along with her playing experience, Blocker has coached at the high school and middle school levels for seven years.

Blocker received her B.S. in Health Education in 1996 and was inducted into the ETSU Hall of Fame in 2005. A native of Augusta, Ga., she is the daughter of Ms. D. Blocker of Augusta, Ga., and has an adorable 12-year-old daughter, Marleana Deshawne Hunter.
