Southern Conference Cross Country Preseason Polls Released

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (August 20, 2003) - The Southern Conference released the preseason coaches' poll for the upcoming cross country season on Tuesday from Asheville, N.C. East Tennessee State University's men's cross country team ranked fourth with 67 points and the women's cross country team ranked sixth with 63 points. Appalachian State and Chattanooga tied for first place in the men's rankings each with five first place votes and 86 total points. ETSU head coach Dave Walker and the men's cross country squad looks to challenge Appalachian State and Chattanooga for the SoCon Championship with the return of the talented all-conference trio of David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.), Bradley Yewer (Newbury, England), and James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland). After claiming title to the 2002 crown, Appalachian State is picked to win the 2003 title for women with eight first place votes and 108 total points. Assistant coach Michelle Byrne and the women's cross country team hope to build on last season and improve upon their position in the top half of the conference. The men's and women's cross country teams will see their first action on Aug. 30, when ETSU participates in the Campbell Early Bird Classic in Buies Creek, N.C. 2003 MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY POLL T1.
