MARYVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 14, 2007) - The ETSU women's cross country team battled through the leftovers of Hurricane Humberto Friday evening, as they competed in the Tennessee Invitational at Lambert Acres Golf Club. Despite the harsh weather conditions, the Buccaneer runners all turned in season best performances, on a course that was used for last season's NCAA South Regional.

Sophomore Vicki Currie (Dumfries, Scotland) led the Buccaneer runners with a ninth-place finish in the 5K event. The Scottish sensation crossed the line in 20:11, bettering her time from last weekends Irish Brigade 5K, by a complete two minutes. Tesha and Terra Haggard (Morristown, Tenn.) followed directly behind Currie in 10th and 11th. The freshmen twins finished the rugged course with respective times of 20:51 and 20:53. Terra bettered her time by a minute-plus, while Tesha's time was thirty-seconds faster than last Sunday's mark. Rounding things out for the Bucs was sophomore Christin Zink (Herndon, Va.) with a mark of 23:05, placing her 12th overall.

"Our girls are steadily improving and turned in a strong effort tonight," said ETSU cross country assistant Mandy Virgets. "They battled through harsh weather conditions but fought hard; hopefully they will continue to improve on this all the way through the conference championships. This was a good test for them today."

The ETSU women's cross country team will now have two weeks off before its next competition. The Lady Bucs will join the men when they compete in the 6th Annual Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 29. The men's cross country will be in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., as they run in the 2007 Winthrop/Asics Cross Country Invitational.
