Rotich paces Bucs at Crimson Classic; Epps leads Lady Bucs in Boone

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. AND BOONE, N.C. (Sept. 18, 2009) - Senior Kenneth Rotich (Nairobi, Kenya) led the ETSU men's cross country team to a sixth-place finish Friday night at the 21st Annual Crimson Classic, located on the grounds of Harry Pritchett Running Course. Meanwhile, junior newcomer Caitlyn Epps (Cookeville, Tenn.) paced the Lady Bucs at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C.

 

For the second straight week, the reigning Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year recipient guided the Buccaneer men's squad across the finish line, as Rotich placed 14th overall with a time of 25:37.50 on the 8K course. As a team, ETSU recorded 164 points en route to its sixth-place finish.

 

Overall, host and South Regional leader, Alabama, claimed the overall team championship after scoring 34 points. Tennessee was edged out by the Crimson Tide by 21 points, while Auburn turned in a third-place performance (76 points).

 

Junior Ben Ronoh (Sotik, Kenya) and red-shirt senior J Penny (Jonesborough, Tenn.) also notched in respectable efforts for the Bucs. Ronoh was clocked in at 26:08.50 and crossed the line in 26th, while Penny was six runners behind in 26:29.30.

 

Alabama's Tyson David won the overall race in 24:25.90.

 

Over in Boone, N.C. Epps led the charge for the Lady Bucs at the Mountaineer Open. The Cookeville, Tenn. native was ETSU's front-runner in the 5K run by clocking in at 21:00.81.

 

The host Mountaineers won the overall meet as Appalachian State edged out Clemson by 11 points - 49 to 60. Freshman Brittney Caudle won the individual title - finishing the course in 17:53.25.

 

The ETSU cross country team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Bucs compete in the Greater Louisville Classic.
