Men’s basketball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country honored by NCAA

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 8, 2012) – The ETSU men’s basketball, women’s soccer and women’s cross country teams were bestowed with the 2011-12 NCAA Public Recognition Award by NCAA President Mark Emmert.

The award is presented to NCAA Division I teams whose Academic Progress Rate (APR) is among the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The NCAA defines APR as a term-by-term measure of eligibility and retention for Division I student-athletes that was developed as an early indicator of eventual graduation rates.

“Thank you for your leadership and support of the academic reform efforts,” said Emmert in a NCAA release. “These teams represent intercollegiate athletics at its best. Once again, I congratulate you, the head coach, team, student-athletes, athletics department and institution for the outstanding academic achievements of these teams.”

During the 2011-12 academic year, four ETSU women’s cross country, six men’s basketball and 17 women’s soccer student-athletes garnered Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors. Additionally, men’s basketball’s Adam Sollazzo (Tampa, Fla.) was named A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while women’s soccer’s Genna Petersen (Loveland, Ohio) and Lucy Goffe (Birmingham, England) were named to the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team.

Sollazzo went on to be named the NACDA Division I-AAA National Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
