Second career Atlantic Sun Runner of the Week award for the sophomore

MACON, Ga. (Oct. 9, 2013) – After a solid performance at the Greater Louisville Classic, sophomore ETSU runner Katie Hirko (Oley, Pa.) has been tabbed the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Runner of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

The accolade is the second of her career for the reigning A-Sun Women’s Freshman Runner of the Year.

At the Classic on Saturday, Oct. 5, Hirko notched an 11th-place overall finish, out of 169 runners, with a time of 17:41.10. This placement paced the Buccaneers who as a team registered a 27th-place standing out of 32 teams at the meet.

This performance marks the third time in as many events that the Pennsylvania native has been the Buccaneers’ top finisher. Hirko is currently averaging a 12th-place overall finish in three events, highlighted by taking first at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational with a time of 21:32.90 in a 6k on Friday, Sept. 20.

Following a disappointing team performance this past week at the Classic, the ETSU women’s cross country team has started the 2013 campaign fairly strong after placing second out of three teams in Blacksburg, Va. and ninth out of 20 squads at the Commodore Classic to begin the season.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C.
