GREENVILLE, S.C. (Oct. 19, 2007) - The ETSU women's golf team posted an opening round 299 to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes in the Lady Paladin Invitational Friday at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
During a first round plagued by wind and rain, sophomore Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) posted a season low round, carding a one-under 71, while senior Maria Ringdahl (Oland Sweden)( notched an even-par 72 to give the Buccaneers a one-stroke advantage over the TCU Horned Frogs on the par-72, 6,288-yard course.
Carmen Perez-Narbon of UNC Wilmington grabbed the individual lead shooting 33 on the front nine on her way to a two-under-par 70. She leads Jansone by one stroke with three players tied for third at even-par.
"We really carried over our strong play from our last tournament into this one," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Reynolds Shelton, whose team is coming off a second place finish earlier this week in the Aztec Fall Classic in San Diego. "This is a really competitive field with 10 teams ranked higher than we are, including Northwestern which has been a consistent Top 20 team. I've known this is what the team is capable of and I'm glad to see them realizing that potential."
