SUNSET BEACH, N.C. (Sept. 20, 2008) - The ETSU women's golf team fired a combined second round score that was a full eight strokes better than any other team in the field, moving into the team lead Saturday at the Sea Trail Women's Intercollegiate.
Heading into Sunday's final round, the Buccaneers (309-298=607) lead host Elon by four strokes and are seven strokes better than third place Murray State. ETSU was powered to the lead by junior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia), who posted the best round of the day with a 2-under-par 70 to take the top spot on the individual leaderboard by three strokes over Elon's Tara McFadden.
"We were very happy with our play today," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "Laura was great again, but she got help from the entire team as well."
Indeed, Jansone was not alone as the Bucs climbed to the top after starting the day in fourth place. True freshman Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cardiz, Spain) was brilliant in just her second collegiate round, firing a 1-under 71 to move into a tie for fifth on the leaderboard.
Meanwhile, senior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales) is tied for 18th after a second round 78, while junior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) is tied for 24th after a 79 on Saturday.
The Bucs will continue with final round play Sunday, with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m. For a complete wrap up of the final round, visit ETSUBucs.com.
