KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2010) - A day after recording the lowest round of her young collegiate career, freshman Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) followed up her 1-under-par 71 with a 1-over 73 in the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championships Saturday afternoon, located at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville.
Evans entered the morning in a tie for eighth and only dropped one spot back after her second round performance. The Buccaneer rookie is currently in a four-way tie for ninth as she sits at even-par 144, placing her eight shots off the lead, which is held by Tennessee's Erica Popson. Popson, who began the day atop the leaderboard, has a two stroke lead over her nearest competitor at 8-under 136.
A triple bogey on Evans' fourth hole of the day - the par-4 No. 13 - is what kept the Gillingham, England native from inching closer to the leader. However, Evans did an excellent job refocusing after the blunder, as she birdied three of her next eight holes to get back at even-par for the day. Evans bogeyed her final hole of the round to put her at 73.
As a team, ETSU went backwards on the leaderboard as the Bucs moved from 10th to 14th overall. Tennessee continued to break away from the pack after firing a 4-under 284 on Saturday and the Lady Vols have a 20 shot lead over second-place TCU.
The third and final round will get underway Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
