JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2011) – With hopes of returning to the NCAA Championships for the third time in five seasons, the ETSU women’s golf team will open its 2011-12 season on Monday, traveling to Louisville, Ky., for the Wilds Eggs Cardinal Cup hosted by the University of Louisville.
The Buccaneers will sport a lineup that includes familiar faces, along with a bevy of newcomers that possess a great deal of potential. Head coach Stefanie Shelton believes her team is poised for a return to the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
“This team certainly has the intention of winning the A-Sun championship and competing for a national championship,” said Shelton, whose team captured the league title back in 2008. “Our scores during practice and qualifying have been extremely strong, and along with the winning attitude they’ve exhibited, I think these ladies have the ability to achieve all of our goals this year.”
“We’re just excited to finally get started in Louisville.”
ETSU returns players such as A-Sun Freshman of the Year Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), who was also a first-team league choice a year ago, along with seniors Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) and Lauren Smith (Cramlington, England), and sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany).
Newcomers include junior transfer Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa), as well as freshmen Kelsey Coey (Bangor, Northern Ireland) and Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany).
