SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 18, 2012) – Senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) both finished tied for 21st on the individual leaderboard, highlighting the ETSU women’s golf team’s efforts during a seventh place finish following third and final round play Tuesday in the Cardinal Cup hosted by the University of Louisville at the Cardinal Club.
Garner carded the best round of the day by a Buccaneer player, finishing at 3-over 75. Meanwhile, Lopez posted a 76 and junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) ended the day at 5-over 77.
“The tough weather conditions today seemed to beat on some of our young ladies,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “If we are going to win – which we are capable of – then we need to play all 54 holes like we are winners. We will get back tonight, and continue to work on making better decisions and improving.”
The Bucs finished 17 strokes back of team champion Louisville. The Cardinals held off Missouri by one stroke for that title, while individually Louisville’s Emily Hass made it a sweep for the host team with a dominating five-stroke win over the field.
Along with the efforts of Garner, Lopez and Evans, other ETSU results included a tie for 45th by true freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) and a tie for 49th by sophomore Gabrielle Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany).
The Bucs will return to action next week beginning Monday with first round play in the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
