WOLCOTT, Colo. (Sept. 24, 2012) – Behind the strong play of sophomore Gabrielle Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) and junior transfer Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain), the ETSU women’s golf team began play Monday in the Golfweek Conference Challenge with an impressive showing and currently stands fourth in the 18-team field at the Red Sky Golf Club’s Fazio Course.
Both Wahl and Lopez carded first-round scores of 1-over-par 73 to finish tied for 17th on the team leaderboard. The Bucs duo is currently five strokes back of Oklahoma’s Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who holds a one-stroke lead over a trio of players after posting a first round score of 4-under 68.
As a team, the Bucs finished the day at 10-over 298 to tie for fourth with former Atlantic Sun Conference foe Campbell, a team that is now a member of the Big South Conference. Both the Bucs and the Camels find themselves 12 strokes back of Pepperdine and Oklahoma, as those two teams finished the day atop the team leaderboard at 2-under 286.
“This was a very good start for us in a tournament with a quality field,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “Gabs and Lourdes both had good rounds today, and as a team we were pretty solid from the top to the bottom of our lineup.”
As for the rest of the Bucs, junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and senior Chloe Garner both finished at 4-over-par 76 to tie for 39th, while freshman Vivienne Chin is currently tied for 45th at 5-over 77.
