AUGUSTA, Ga. (March 15, 2013) – Senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) fired scores of 2-over-par 74 to power the ETSU women’s golf team during opening round play Friday in the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
Garner and Lopez both tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard and are just five strokes back of Vanderbilt’s Lauren Stratton, who bested the field on the first day by carding a round of 3-under-par 69. As a team, the Buccaneers are tied for fifth at 304, while No. 9 Vanderbilt holds the top spot by five strokes over No. 16 Purdue.
The Bucs are currently ahead of nationally-ranked programs such as Kentucky (No. 34) and Texas-San Antonio (No. 48), and they are just behind teams such as No. 22 Texas and No. 26 Notre Dame.
“We had a great game plan coming into today, and the ladies played with confidence and fight until the last putt dropped,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “It’s great to see this team play the game like we know they can.”
Along with Garner and Lopez, junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) both tied for 33rd after posting rounds of 6-over 78.
The Bucs will continue with second round play at the Insperity Intercollegiate on Saturday, followed by third and final round action on Sunday. Fans can watch ETSU’s progress in the event by visiting Golfstat.com and clicking on the tournament link to access live scoring.
