OXFORD, Miss. (April 7, 2013) – In her 10-plus years as head coach of the ETSU women’s golf team, Stefanie Shelton has led her teams to multiple tournament victories, a conference title, and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.

However, she was very specific in describing her team’s efforts this weekend in the Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course, after the Buccaneers finished in fourth place ahead of ranked programs such as No. 34 Kentucky and tradition-rich No. 29 LSU.

“This was the best performance by a women’s golf team in the history of the program,” Shelton said. “I could not have asked for more from the ladies this week. They played their hearts out on this challenging golf course against one of the strongest fields we have seen.”

The Bucs finished ahead of five Southeastern Conference schools, including Mississippi State, Mississippi and Missouri. They also bested programs such as Harvard, Tulsa, Minnesota and Memphis in the 18-team field.

While No. 49 Coastal Carolina took home both the team and individual title, the Bucs were more focused on their own successes from the weekend, as they finished just behind No. 24 Baylor and No. 20 Tulane.

"To go head-to-head with LSU, a program that is rich with tradition and national championship titles – and to beat them after three days – says a lot about the caliber of our ladies,” Shelton said.

Individually, senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) enjoyed one of her most consistent tournaments ever, carding rounds of 67-73-75 to finish at 215 and in fifth place on the leaderboard. In fact, her 5-under-par 67 on Friday was the best round of her golfing life.

Meanwhile, sophomore Gabriella Wahl ( Heidenheim, Germany) and freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) both fired team-best rounds of 1-over-par 73 to power the Bucs on Sunday. Wahl ultimately finished just behind Garner in seventh place, while Chin tied for 24th. In addition, junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) posted a strong 2-over 74 on Sunday and tied for 38th in the event.

Next up for the Bucs will be the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships April 15-17 in Jekyll Island, S.C. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the spring season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
