AUBURN, Ala. (May 11, 2013) – Unable to make one last charge, the ETSU women’s golf team’s season came to a close Saturday during the third and final round of the NCAA East Regional at the Auburn University Club.
Needing to place in the top eight on the team leaderboard to advance to the NCAA Championships, the Buccaneers ultimately posted a finish of 17th. While the Bucs enjoyed an Atlantic Sun Conference championship this season and bested teams such as No. 47 Penn State and No. 38 Texas State during the regional competition, they came up short of their ultimate goal to reach the national tournament.
“Obviously, this was not the kind of day that we want to have, but we still finished ahead of perennially strong programs like Mississippi and Penn State,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team carded its highest round of the tournament with a 310 on the final day. “Still, this season has been a tremendous year and a step forward for our program. Winning a conference championship for the second time in school history, beating multiple Top 20 teams, and then competing for a chance to go to nationals were just some of the things to be proud of and build upon.”
For the Bucs, junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) was one player who thrived during Saturday’s pressure-packed final round, carding the lowest score of the tournament for an ETSU player. Her 1-under-par 71 helped her rally to finish at 5-over 221, as she tied for a team-best showing of 35th individually.
As for the rest of the field, No. 2 Alabama took home the team title by eight strokes over No. 20 Tulane, while Stephanie Meadow made it a Crimson Tide sweep by capturing the individual title with a three-round score of 13-under-par 203.
Shelton said she was happy with her team’s efforts throughout the year.
“These young ladies worked and learned through many challenges and obstacles this season,” Shelton said. “Coach (Rachel) Ingram and I were extremely pleased with all they were able to achieve and accomplish. They made us all proud.”
The Bucs will now turn their attention to preparations for the 2013-14 season. Fans wishing to stay up-to-date with the women’s golf program can do so by visiting ETSUBucs.com and clicking on the women’s golf link throughout the summer months.
