ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2014) – In the spring of 2013, the ETSU women’s golf team finished its season with an Atlantic Sun Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Regionals. The Buccaneers hope the start of the 2014 spring season is the beginning of a similar journey.
ETSU will open its spring schedule Sunday with first round play in the UCF Challenge at the Eagle Creek Golf Club. After a fall season that included several strong showings and a team victory in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, head coach Stefanie Shelton said her squad has reason to be optimistic.
“We are very excited to begin this spring after a fall filled with great golf and a team title,” Shelton said. “This first event in Florida is a very strong field and an opportunity to go head-to-head with some perennial power programs. We are also excited to see how our newest spring addition, Linda Dobele, can contribute to our solid top four players.”
Dobele, a native of Ogre, Latvia, certainly has a strong resume, with two Lithuanian Junior Championships and a 2013 Latvian Amateur title to her credit. In addition, she has been a member of the Latvian National Team since the age of 12 and recently competed for her country in the World Amateur Team Championships.
She joins an ETSU squad that already returns five of six players from the 2013 A-Sun Championship team, a talented group that includes three seniors, a junior and a sophomore. Leading the way is senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), a three-time Atlantic Sun Conference first-team selection, as well as junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), a two-time A-Sun first teamer and the league’s 2012 individual champion.
But along with the experienced leadership of Evans and Wahl, the Bucs also return reigning A-Sun Freshman of the Year and All-A-Sun second team pick Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) along with talented seniors Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) and Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain). In addition, the Bucs have added a pair of skilled freshmen in Rachel Pollock (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) and Dominika Czudkova (Cesky Tesin, Czech Republic).
The Bucs will compete in four events during the spring, before attempting to defend their A-Sun crown at the league championships April 14-16 in Jekyll Island, S.C.
