TULSA, Okla. (May 22, 2014) – ETSU junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) said she learned a lot from her first two rounds of play in the NCAA Championships at the Tulsa Country Club. Her effort in Thursday’s third round only confirmed Wahl’s assessment.
With a birdie on her seventh hole of the day, Wahl got to 1-under-par and then stayed there to card a score of 69, moving up 23 spots from a tie for 50th to a tie for 27th heading into Friday’s fourth and final round. Wahl now stands at 8-over-par 218 for the tournament, while Duke’s Celine Boutier and Southern California’s Doris Chen are tied for the individual lead at 3-under-par 207.
“I am really happy with today’s round, because bogey free always feels great,” Wahl said. “I simply didn’t have the mental mistakes I did yesterday, and I hope to continue that tomorrow.”
Wahls bogey-free round included 17 pars and the single birdie on the course’s 16th hole, a 466-yard Par 5. Having started on No. 10, it was Wahl’s seventh hole of the day.
ETSU assistant coach Lauren Stratton – who is on the trip with Wahl as ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton is on maternity leave – said she was impressed by Wahl’s round on Thursday.
“Gabriella played a solid round today,” Stratton said. “She took advantage of the quieter winds this morning, and whenever she hit a poor shot she followed it up with a nice recovery shot. This was a good round for moving day.”
The fourth and final round will be played on Friday, and Wahl is scheduled to start at 12:15 (CST) on hole No. 1. Fans can watch live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com and clicking on the NCAA Championship link, while ETSUBucs.com will also provide a complete wrap up following each day’s play.
