Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State Univeristy athletic department today announced that Katie Weiss (Cayce, S.C.) has been hired as the new womens golf head coach.
For the past two years, Weiss has played golf professionally on the SBC Futures Tour and The Players West Professional Golf Tour. She recorded nine top-20 finishes during her professional career. Weiss placed fifth at the Colorado Womens Open in Denver, Colo. and eighth at a Tournament played in Victorville, Calif.
Before entering the professional ranks, Weiss served as the Director of Golf Instruction at the Charwood Country Club in Columbia, S.C. She developed and ran the Charwood Junior Golf School while serving as an assistant coach for a local high school.
Weiss played collegiate golf at the University of South Carolina from 1994-97.
"When I came into this job I had a couple of positions to fill, including a womens golf head coach," ETSU athletic director Todd Stansbury said. "I was determined not to make a long-term decision based on short-term circumstances. After a national search, I felt that Katie was the opportune candidate and would bring energy and experience to this program. I want our womens golf program to compete at the top of the Southern Conference and on a national scale. Katie Weiss can lead us to that level."
The Bucs are scheduled to begin their spring season on March 19-20 at the Chris Bannister/Gamecock Classic in Jacksonville, Ala.
