JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (February 15, 2004) - Head coach Stefanie Reynolds and the East Tennessee State University women's golf team will open their spring schedule today at the third annual BSC Southern Shootout hosted by Birmingham-Southern University.
The tournament will be played today and Tuesday at the Greystone Golf Club in Birmingham, Ala., with 15 teams scheduled to participate. The field includes teams such as Troy State, Tennessee Tech, Samford, Mercer, Arkansas Tech, Jackson State and New Orleans.
"It's been a rough preseason getting ready for our first tournament because of the weather, but if anything we'll be the most mentally tough team here because we've battled through the weather and the cold all preseason," Reynolds said. "We had one of our lowest qualifying sessions ever before this tournament, and I think that's an indication that things are still moving in the right direction for our program."
The Lady Bucs will be led by senior Kristen Fletcher (Cookeville, Tenn.), whose 77.1 scoring average this season is on pace to set a new program record. In addition, sophomore Ashley Barton (Seffner, Fla.) has a stroke average of 78.5 so far this season, after setting a freshman record for stroke average last season.
"Kristen holds the all-time lowest scoring average right now and she wants to keep it," Reynolds said. "Ashley's been playing well, too, and those two players are leading the team right now. But the rest of the team has really been backing them up with low scores, too."
