Lady Bucs sign Swedish golf star Ringdahl

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 10, 2004) - East Tennessee State University women's golf coach Stefanie Reynolds announced Saturday that Swedish golf standout Maria Ringdahl has signed a letter of intent to play for the Buccaneers beginning with the 2004-05 season. Ringdahl, a native of Kalmar, Sweden, is arguably the most heralded recruit in the history of Lady Buccaneer golf. After winning the 2003 Trummenas Ladies Open in 2003 - a Nordic Professional Tour Event - Ringdahl was recruited by several Top 20 programs in the United States. She chose to attend ETSU and play for Reynolds. "Maria's goal is to play professional golf after college," said Reynolds, who guided the Lady Bucs to the program's first-ever tournament victory in 2004. "To do so, she needs to be a part of a program where she can grow as a person, while elevating her game to the next level. With the addition of the Warren-Greene Golf Facility, and the direction our program is heading, she will have the opportunity to prepare for professional play while helping lead our program to the NCAAs." In addition to her win at the Trummenas Ladies Open, Ringdahl also finished first at the Junior Masters Invitational in 2003 in Sweden, and also has three Top 3 finishes in amateur events this summer. She was ranked as her country's top amateur player twice in the last three years and is currently ranked third. Reynolds said Ringdahl is a special addition. "It's exciting to have a golfer of Maria's caliber that believes in our vision as a program and has a desire to help us reach a high level of success," Reynolds said. "She is traveling throughout Europe this summer in amateur and professional tournaments. She will join our incoming girls, Natalia Giraldo (Cali, Colombia) and Cindy Phillips (Johnson City) in the fall."
