MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 16, 2010) - Carding the day's best team score at 292, the ETSU women's golf team finished just two strokes off the lead and posted a third place finish following third and final round action in the Hurricane Invitational Tuesday at the Don Shula Country Club.
The Bucs ended the event at 896 (304-300-292) and finished two strokes back of team champion Central Florida at 894, while Georgia State finished second at 895. Individually, ETSU sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) fired a team-best round of 71 on the final day to finish tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard, five strokes back of individual medalist Christine Wong of San Diego State. Wong finished at 217 for the tournament.
"I am really proud of how our team played today, especially shooting the low score of the day," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "Finishing in front of teams like San Diego State, Coastal Carolina, N.C. State, Miami, Kentucky, Memphis and Southern Miss helps get our spring off to a strong start. Our goal is to win events, but this was a good, quality effort by our ladies."
Along with Muehl's team-best effort, fellow sophomore Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for seventh and just six strokes back of the lead after posting a final round score of 72. In addition, seniors Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) and Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport) finished tied for 17th and 20th, respectively, while fellow senior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) tied for 38th.
The Bucs will return to action Feb. 21 at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, and ETSUBucs.com will provide daily updates throughout the event.
