KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Oct. 8, 2010) - Freshman Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) fired an ETSU best 1-under 71 Friday afternoon, and is currently tied for eighth after round one of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships, located at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville.
Evans, who is four shots off the lead, notched three birdies on the day - including one on the 462-yard, par-5 No. 17 to enter the clubhouse under par. The 71 shot by Evans marks her best round as a Buccaneer, and the Gillingham, England native trails Tennessee's Erica Popson after she carded the lowest round of the afternoon at 5-under 67.
Meanwhile, fellow ETSU teammate Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) is tied for 33rd after recording a 3-over 75.
As a team, the Bucs are tied for tenth after tallying a first-round score of 304, putting ETSU 24 shots behind in-state rival and host Tennessee. The Lady Vols finished the day with a team-leading 8-under 280 on the par-72, 6,302-yard course.
