ETSU women struggle on first day at Northrop Gruman

PALOS VERDES, Calif. (Feb. 14, 2011) - The ETSU women's golf team did not enjoy a strong start during first round play Monday at the 2011 Northrop Gruman Regional Challenge, as the Buccaneers currently stand in 13th place at the event hosted by Ohio State University at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.
ETSU finished the day at 327 (+43), while USC is currently leading the event after posting a first-round score of 290 (+6). On the bright side, the Bucs are within 14 strokes of the four teams in front of them, which include three ranked programs - such as No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 30 Louisville.
Individually, UCLA's Tiffany Lus and Ohio State's Amy Meier are tied for the top spot after posting scores of 1-under-par 70. USC's Lizette Salas, the nation's No. 7-ranked player, is currently one stroke back at even-par 71.
The Bucs' top individual performance came from freshman Sian Evans (Gillingham, Englan), who finished tied for 38th with an 8-over 79. No other ETSU player finished better than a tie for 57th.
The tournament will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday with second and third round play. Live scoring from the 5,912-year, Par 71 course is available at www.golfstat.com.
