GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 4, 2011) – Having the luxury of the lead heading into Tuesday’s third and final round at the Starmount Fall Classic, the ETSU women’s golf team was unable to hold off Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland for the team title at the Starmount Country Club.

The Buccaneers, who began the day with a five stroke advantage, ultimately finished the tournament at 908 (304-302-302) and ended the event seven strokes behind Maryland. The Terrapins posted a strong team score of 290 in the final round, which bested the lowest single round score of any team in the tournament by an impressive 12 strokes.

“Hats off to Maryland for its play today,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We didn’t handle the lead well and threw away a lot of shots on the front. However, we did fight back to three-over par on the back to capture second place and beat some good teams.”

As a squad, the Bucs finished second and bested No. 44 Campbell, as well as teams such as Georgia State, and former Southern Conference rivals Furman, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, Elon and Wofford.

Individually, senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) carded a 5-over-par 76 to lead all ETSU players with a strong tie for 6th. Meanwhile, sophomore teammate Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) also finished in the Top 10 with a tie for 9th.

The overall individual title went to Georgia State’s Charlotte Lorentzen, who bested a pair of Maryland players by three strokes.

Other solid showings for the Bucs included a tie for 16th by freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), while junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) finished tied for 23rd.

The ETSU women’s golf team will return to action on Oct. 9 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. For more on the team throughout the 2011-12 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
