WESTON, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2012) – With the team’s leading scorer from the fall season forced to withdraw midway through the second round, the ETSU women’s golf team still managed to battle through that challenge and finished tied for ninth on the team leaderboard following first and second round play Monday in the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge at the Weston Hills Country Club.

Playing in their first event of the spring season, the Buccaneers were forced to go without sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England). After struggling with an illness throughout the past week, Evans attempted to play on Monday but was unable to complete the second round.

“It was a rough day for the Bucs,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “Sian withdrew in pain and when that happened we fell behind the rest of the field. Even with today’s obstacles, we have the opportunity tomorrow to fight back, put together some solid performances, and fire a round that we can build on throughout the semester.”

In Evans’ absence, ETSU’s Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) led the way with a score of 148 (76-72) to finish tied for eighth individually. She is currently 10 strokes back of leader Augusta James of N.C. State, who fired a 138 (69-69) on the day.

As a team, ETSU finished at 310-305=615 and tied for ninth. N.C. State is also leading the team competition after carding a team score of 289-287=576.

Other ETSU results included a tie for 21st by senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain), while freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) tied for 38th.

Third and final round play from the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge will be played on Tuesday. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012 spring season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
