STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (March 26, 2012) – Powered by outstanding individual performances from sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), the ETSU women’s golf team posted its best single day of play this spring, finishing atop the team leaderboard following first and second round action Monday in the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate at the Eagle’s Landing Country Club.

The Buccaneers lead the team competition by three strokes over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Maryland, after posting a team score of 9-over-par 585 (296-289) on the day. Third and final round action is set for Tuesday.

Individually, Evans posted her personal best for a single round with a 5-under-par 67 during the day’s second round. She finished atop the individual leaderboard at 5-under 139 (72-67), and was one stroke better than Wahl, who ended the day alone in second place at 4-under 140 after carding back-to-back rounds of 70.

Both Evans and Wahl posted bogey-free rounds.

“The ladies were champions today in their body language and mindsets,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “They competed from the first hole to the 36th, and to say I’m proud would be an understatement. We have worked on our mental approach to the game and the girls really displayed persistence and composure today.

“I was really pleased with both Sian and Gabriella’s play, and I think all of us are looking forward to playing tomorrow and competing.”

Along with Evans and Wahl, other ETSU results included a tie for 29th by sophomore Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany), a tie for 32nd by junior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and a tie for 43rd by senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain).
