NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (April 10, 2012) – ETSU freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) and sophomore Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) continued their brilliant play at the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championships, finishing in first and second place following Tuesday’s second round at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.

While Evans posted a team-best round of 2-under-par 70 on the day, Wahl fired a 1-over-par 73 and maintained a one-stroke edge on the field as the tournament moves into the third and final round on Wednesday. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of both Wahl and Evans, the Buccaneers relinquished the top spot on the team leaderboard and will enter the third round six strokes back of Kennesaw State.

The Owls rallied to take the team lead by placing four players in the Top 10, and finished with an impressive score of 4-under-par 284. Kennesaw State stands at 576 (292-284) for the event, followed by the Bucs at 582 (290-292).

“The girls played all the way to the 18th hole today and I’m proud of their effort,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We will come out here with the same game plan, play our best, and see where that will put us tomorrow.”

Along with Wahl and Evans, ETSU senior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) fired her second straight round of 2-over 74 to finish 11th on the individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, teammates Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) both ended the day tied for 26th.

The Bucs are attempting to capture their second A-Sun title, after winning the trophy back in 2008. In addition, with a victory on Wednesday, ETSU would earn its third trip to the NCAA Championships in the last five years. The Bucs earned spots in the nationals in both 2008 and 2010.

Third and final round action at the A-Sun Women’s Golf Championship begins Wednesday at 8 a.m. For live stats and scoring, visit Golfstat.com, while ETSUBucs.com and AtlanticSun.org will have complete coverage following each day’s action.
