COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 10, 2012) – ETSU freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) began play in the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday afternoon, carding a 7-over-par 79 at the Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.
Wahl had put herself in good position to score early on in the round, but the pace of the greens took a toll as she finished the day tied for 56th on the 126-player leaderboard. Even so, she is just nine strokes back of the lead and still has two days and 36 holes of golf left to play.
ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton said the early struggles on the putting surface were the difference for Wahl on Thursday.
“Gabriella hit some great approaches early in the round today, but the quick speed of the greens got the best of her,” Shelton said. “She had to work hard for pars on the greens all day.”
Posting a round that consisted of nine pars, eight bogeys and a birdie, Wahl was left searching for her game after a long layoff from competition. Before taking the last three-plus weeks off, the Buccaneer freshman had won back-to-back tournaments to end the regular season – including an individual title run in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.
“It’s been a month since our last competition, and Gabriella tried to force some shots instead of pacing herself and knowing the results were going to come with patience,” Shelton said. “If she can get back to focusing on things she can control – as she was mastering in her last two wins – her game will be there as she continues to look like a champion on the course.”
Second round play will continue on Friday, with third and final round action set for Saturday. Fans can get live stats updates and results by visiting Golfstat.com, while ETSUBucs.com will provide a complete wrap up of each round following the day’s play.
