COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 12, 2012) – Firing her best round of the week, ETSU freshman Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) wrapped up play in the NCAA Central Regional with a strong round of 1-over-par 73 Saturday at the Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course.
With that effort, Wahl ended the event tied for 34th in the 126-player field. In fact, she finished ahead of 11 players who were ranked in the Top 100 nationally by Golfstat.com.
ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton was extremely pleased with Wahl, who finished the event with a score of 229 (79-77-73). Her round on Saturday consisted of four birdies and five bogeys, and she actually stood at 2-under midway through the day.
“Gaby played so well today,” Shelton said. “I could not have been more proud. She really learned the course over the first two days and it showed today. She was very aggressive and played her game. That was the key for her today.”
Saturday’s final round wraps up a historic and record setting freshman season for Wahl, who set new standards for any newcomer to the ETSU women’s golf program. She led the team in stroke average for the season and ended the regular season with back-to-back tournament victories – which included an Atlantic Sun Conference championship.
For her efforts, she was a first-team All A-Sun pick and the league’s freshman of the year. Unfortunately, she came up just short of earning a spot in the nationals.
“It was a great season for Gaby and what we saw from her is what she expects to do,” Shelton said. “This is the type of player she is and we’re excited to have her for three more seasons.”
