WOLCOTT, Colo. (Sept. 25, 2012) – In a field that boasts nine teams ranked in the nation’s Top 50, the ETSU women’s golf team earned the praise of head coach Stefanie Shelton as the Buccaneers continued to post quality scores across the board and finished in a tie for eighth place during Tuesday’s second round in the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club’s Fazio Course.
Sophomore Gabrielle Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) led the way for the Buccaneers by carding a round of 2-over-par 74 and moving up one spot on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 16th. Meanwhile, ETSU junior transfer Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) finished tied for 24th.
As a team, the Bucs are even with No. 2-ranked UCLA for eighth, and the team is also currently ahead of programs such as No. 30 Florida State and No. 32 Tulsa.
“It was a tough golf course today,” Shelton said. “Our girls struggled early and fought back to solid finishes. We are the only team other than the first place team to have all ladies in the 70s for both days. That is a testament to our consistency and solid squad in such a competitive field like this. This is the best field we will see all year and our Bucs are proving they can compete with anyone on a challenging golf course like this.”
No. 23-ranked Pepperdine currently leads at 1-under 575 for the event, while the Bucs currently stand at 604 after the first two days. Individually, Demi Runas of UC Davis is at 6-under 138 (71-67) and holds a one-stroke lead over Grace Na of Pepperdine.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 47th by junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), while senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) and freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) are tied for 50th and 52nd, respectively.
The Bucs will continue with third and final round play on Wednesday. Fans can watch live scoring and get full results by visiting Golfstat.com. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
