Four Bucs post top-six finishes in record-setting team victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Oct. 2, 2012) – Finishing a full 24 strokes ahead of any other team in the field, the ETSU women’s golf team placed four players in the top six individually and steamrolled the competition en route to a record-setting victory Tuesday in the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic at the Starmount Country Club.

The Buccaneers set multiple new program records during the tournament, including best second round score (283), best two-round score (570) and best three-round score (852). ETSU finished 24 strokes ahead of Maryland, while also besting No. 20 East Carolina by 29 strokes and No. 17 Campbell by 36 strokes.

“We were in this position a few times last year and couldn’t get the victory – but today we became winners,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose teams have captured 10 tournament titles in her 10 seasons with the program. “Our team faced the challenge of playing with the lead and being chased, and they welcomed it. They played like champions shooting 2-under for the day.

“Rachel (Ingram, ETSU’s assistant coach) and I could not be more proud and we expect more wins this year with the heart and competitiveness of this team.”

Individually, junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) posted a career-best three-round score of 212 and finished second on the leaderboard. East Carolina’s F. Gustafsson Spang captured the individual title at 206.

Meanwhile, Evans’ teammates were equally impressive, as senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) matched her career low round with a 2-under-par 69 on Tuesday, and sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) finished just one stroke off her personal collegiate best with a 3-under-par 68.

Wahl – who posted the day’s low-round score – and Garner finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while junior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) finished sixth on the leaderboard. Junior Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) also put together a strong performance in the event, tying for 26th.

“I am so excited, happy and proud to be a Buccaneer right now,” Evans said. “My game has been solid from the beginning of the season so I’m happy everything has come together now. We gave it our all today. Everyone played their hearts out and we were rewarded for our hard work.”

The Bucs will return to action Oct. 13 at the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
