BLANCO, Texas (Feb. 15, 2013) – Encouraged by a successful fall season, the ETSU women’s golf team will open its spring schedule this weekend when the Buccaneers begin play in the Jim West Challenge Sunday at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club.

The Buccaneers are coming off a fall campaign in which they enjoyed a victory in the UNCG Starmount Forest Tournament, as well as a second place showing in the Palmetto Intercollegiate. ETSU is currently ranked 53rd by and 56th by

“The depth on this team – from our freshman to senior – naturally pushes the team forward,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “They are very eager to get on the road and compete. We have made some tournament schedule changes this year, with the Jim West Challenge being one of them. We will see more central and west teams, including Texas State who is currently 38th.

“Every chance we have to compete against higher-ranked teams offers us the opportunity to increase our national ranking – and we welcome these opportunities.”

The Buccaneers are pleased to have a youthful, yet talented group of players. Leading the way for ETSU with a team-best stroke average of 74.7 has been sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), who a year ago earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships. She is followed closely by junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), an All Atlantic Sun Conference pick who has posted a stroke average of 74.9 so far this season.

In addition to the consistency of Wahl and Evans, the team has also gotten strong individual performances from others on the roster. This includes a second-place effort by true freshman Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) in the team’s last event of the fall season, and a fifth-place showing by senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) earlier in the year.

The Bucs will play in five regular season events during the spring before wrapping up play with a trip to the A-Sun Championships beginning April 15 in Jekyll Island, S.C.
