EAST LANSING, Mich. (Sept.15, 2013) – Posting the low team score of the day, the ETSU women’s golf team ultimately finished with a strong sixth-place showing Sunday in a very competitive, 15-team field in the Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.

Senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) led the way for the Buccaneers, firing a final round score of even-par 72 to finish tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. ETSU placed ahead of programs such as Miami and Indiana, and just three strokes or less behind Oregon, Northwestern and Notre Dame.

"I was extremely proud of the team’s effort this weekend,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “They played a great round of golf today in cold weather conditions, and they beat the entire field with the low round of the day. This tournament shows the tremendous potential for the year, as we competed closely with some national powerhouses.

“Individually, I’m really happy with Sian’s play. She was a great leader, she stayed confident, and she made the game she brought this weekend work for her. For the first tournament of the year, the team showed great heart and mental composure.”

Host Michigan State enjoyed the home-course advantage and captured the team title by four strokes over fellow Big 10 Conference foe Ohio State. The Spartans made it a clean sweep of the hardware as Liz Nagel finished at 1-over-par 217 for the tournament, winning the individual title by three strokes over a trio of players that tied for second place at 4-over-par.

Other ETSU results included a tie for 21st by junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), and a tie for 24th by both sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) and senior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain).

The Buccaneers will return to action Sept. 23 at the Golfweek Challenge in Wolcott, Colo. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2013-14 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
