WOLCOTT, Colo. (Sept. 23, 2013) – A trio of players led the way for the ETSU women’s golf team Monday, as the Buccaneers finished first round play in fifth place at the Golfweek Challenge hosted by the Red Sky Golf Club.
ETSU junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany), along with seniors Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) and Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) each fired rounds of 4-over-par 76, while sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) carded a 5-over 77 as the Buccaneers finished the first day of action ahead of teams such as SMU, Boston College, Indiana and Harvard.
“It was a solid day for our girls,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “This is one of the most challenging courses we will play all year, so to begin with a solid round after having the practice round rained out was great.
“The girls continue to expect great things from themselves, and that makes for a great atmosphere for success.”
The Bucs – who finished at 17-over 305 as a team – find themselves just four strokes out of second place behind UC Davis (304), Denver (303) and TCU (301). Meanwhile, Pepperdine posted the most impressive round of the day and finished at 1-over 289.
Individually, Pepperdine’s trio of Alina Ching, Marissa Chow and Grace Na finished the day tied for first place with scores of 1-under-par 71. Wahl, Evans and Lopez are currently tied for 14th.
Second round play at the Golfweek Challenge will continue on Tuesday, followed third and final round action on Wednesday. Fans can watch live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com and clicking on the Golfweek Challenge link, and ETSUBucs.com will provide a full wrap up following each day’s action.
