Good news highlights Bucs’ final day at Old Waverly event

WEST POINT, Miss. (Oct. 2, 2013) – There was plenty of good news surrounding the ETSU women’s golf team on Wednesday, as the Buccaneers garnered their highest national ranking in school history and junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) was named the Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Week.

The Buccaneers, who were wrapping up play in the third round of the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational at the Old Waverly Golf Club, learned early in the day that the latest Golfstat.com national rankings placed the Bucs at No. 41 out of 260 Division I programs.

Then, later in the afternoon, the A-Sun offices announced that Wahl had earned her sixth career A-Sun weekly honor thanks to her strong seventh-place finish last week at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton said this was a proud day for the ETSU women’s golf program.

“It is exciting that this team has reached a new program best with a ranking of 41st,” Shelton said. “It is a special team and they are placing themselves among the nation’s elite. But while it’s a place we have worked hard to reach, we will continue to move forward and aim even higher.

“We have celebrated little victories over the past few years with breaking scoring records and posting lower scoring averages, but it is always a team goal to climb the national rankings. The ladies in our program have worked hard to earn this achievement.”

As for the team’s play on the course, the Bucs find themselves in the midst of a demanding three-week stretch that has seen the team play in three different tournaments. However, despite dealing with fatigue, the team continues to post solid results and finished fifth Wednesday at the Old Waverly event.

While Wahl and sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) both carded team-best rounds of 73 in the final round, senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) posted the best all-around effort of the tournament and finished the day tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard. Meanwhile, Wahl tied for 12th, while senior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) and Chin finished tied for 21st and 39th, respectively.

Host Mississippi State ran away with the team competition by 21 strokes over East Carolina, as the Bulldogs placed three players in the top four individually.

The road-weary Bucs will return to action on Monday as first round play in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina gets underway in Greenville, N.C.
