Pinehurst, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2015) – The East Tennessee State University women’s golf team competed hard on the first day of the Pinehurst Challenge. On Monday, the Bucs played 36 holes of golf and finished in ninth place out of 19 teams. Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia) carded the lowest overall score for ETSU with three under par.

Hee Ying Loy (Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia) led the team in the first 18 holes as she finished even on the front and back nine. Loy finished Monday with five total birdies on five different holes. This is also the lowest score recorded by a Buccaneer this fall. In that round, she birdied: two par fours, one par three, and one par five. Chin is currently tied for 8th place individually while Loy is tied for 21st.

Linda Dobele (Ogre, Latvia) and Rachel Pollock (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) each improved their scores from the first to second round. Dobele ended her second round at the Pinehurst Challenge by posting a +2. Pollock improve by shooting a +3 in the second round.

After the first round, the team was in 10th place but moved up to 9th by the end of the day. ETSU shot a +9 as a team the first day and are in the running with many powerhouse teams. The team is just eight strokes out of fifth place.

East Carolina leads the tournament, as the Pirates are shooting -6 under on the first day of the tournament. The University of Tennessee-Chattanooga is tied with Elon at -1.
