Loy leads ETSU with career day in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 24, 2016)Loy Hee Ying (Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia) shot a career-best 6-under 66 and moved into the top-10 individually, while ETSU women's golf improved five spots at the Lady Paladin Invitational on Saturday.

Loy shot the second-best round of the 2016 Lady Paladin as she inked eight birdies in her second round in Greenville, S.C. She started her day off with back-to-back birdies and finished the back nine with a 4-under score. Saturday’s outing was a career-best round for the sophomore. Her previous low was 3-under 69, which she recorded twice last season. She moves into tied for 8th individually at 1-under 143 and four strokes out of the first place Alice Chen of Furman.

Linda Dobele (Ogre, Latvia) improved from day one as she dropped her score by one stroke to 1-over 73. The Latvian native recorded 13 pars and two birdies en-route to her best outing of the season and helped ETSU jump five spots heading into the final day of the Lady Paladin.

As a team, the Bucs improved by seven strokes to jump into a tie for 12th place with SoCon foe Mercer. ETSU is currently 25-over 601 moving into the third round on Sunday.

There is a tie for first place between No. 20 Furman and No. 32 Texas. Both teams have shot under par in both rounds including a team-low 7-under 281 in the first round by Furman. The Longhorns matched the Paladins’ overall score by inking a 4-under 284 in the second round led by Sophia Schubert who shot a 3-under 69.

No. 48 Augusta University shot the lowest round of the tournament at 10-under 278 on the second day and moved into fourth place.

On the individual leaderboard, Chen leads the tournament with 5-under 139, but there are 19 golfers within five strokes of her, including ETSU’s Loy Hee Ying.

ETSU is set to tee off the final day at 8 a.m. on the back nine and are paired with Tulsa, UNCW, and Georgetown.
