SPARTANBURG, S.C. (April 12, 2017) – For her first place finish at The Brickyard Intercollegiate, Loy Hee Ying (Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia) was recognized by the Southern Conference for her performance by naming her SoCon women’s co-golfer of the week and student-athlete of the week.
Loy has excelled on the links and in the classroom. She is a sophomore business major and sports a 3.941 cumulative GPA.
In the most recent outing in Macon, Ga., Loy finished tied for first place where she shattered the tournament and course record by shooting a 4-under 68. She finished the two-day tournament carding a 3-under 213 (72-73-68), which put her in a tie for first individually with Furman’s Haylee Harford.
The third round score of 68 marks the eighth time in Loy’s collegiate career that she has shot below a 70. The first place finish is Loy’s second individual victory of her career and her second in the last four tournament outings. The top-5 finish for Loy was her eighth in her ETSU career, and this year alone, she averages sixth place, which leads the Buccaneer squad.
Loy and the ETSU women’s golf team will now take two weeks off as they prepare for the Southern Conference Championships. The tournament is being held in Lexington, S.C., and the three-day tournament begins April 23.
The General Shale Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week recognizes student-athletes that hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and whose sport is currently in-season. Nominees must have also completed at least one full academic year at their respective institutions.
