The Southern Conference Player of the Year shot a 2-over 74 to finished tied for seventh

COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 8, 2017) – Despite it being a cold and windy afternoon on day one of the NCAA Regional in Columbus, Ohio at the Ohio State University Golf Club Scarlet Course, sophomore Loy Hee Ying (Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia) turned in an impressive two-over 74 to finish tied for seventh.  

At 2-over, Loy is just four shots off the lead of Purdue’s Marta Martin Garcia who shot a 2-under 70. Loy, who is the 57th ranked player in the nation according to GolfStat.com, finished ahead of ten players who are ranked in the top 50.

To start the day, the 2017 SoCon Player of the Year came out on fire as she birdied three of her first six holes to move to 3-under for the round. After shooting six over in the next five holes, Loy rebounded with back-to-back birdies on hole 12 and 13 to get to one-over. During the final five holes, Loy pared four of them to finish the day with a 2-over 74.

Loy is tied for seventh with five individuals including No.20 Kelly Grassel of Florida and No.63 Elodie Van Dievoet from Michigan. Marta Martin Garcia of Purdue leads the tournament at 2-under while right behind her is No.35 Morgane Metraux from Florida State and Texas A&M’s No.12 Maddie Szeryk at even par.

Monday marked the first day of the three-day NCAA Columbus Regional with day two beginning tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. The Columbus Region will conclude competition on Wednesday, May 10.  Four regional tournaments are conducted from May 8-10 with a total of 384 participants selected for regional competition. 132 will advance to the championship finals with six teams and three individuals from each regional site.
