ETSU Opens at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate in Knoxville

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 17, 2017) -- In the last full week of summer, ETSU’s women’s golf team begins its 2017 fall schedule at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.

The three-round tournament at the par-71, 5897-yard Cherokee Country Club will consist of three rounds. The first two rounds will be Monday, September 18, with the final round on Tuesday, September 19.

The Bucs are part of a 15-team field that has two squads ranked in Golf Week magazine’s pre-season Top 30. Wake Forest is 13th and the host school, Tennessee, is 23rd.

“The Mercedes Benz Championship has been one of the premier events in the country for as long as I can remember,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “It’s a great opportunity to compete against a full field of the nation’s top teams in a first class event.”

The rest of the field includes Brigham Young, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa, Kent State, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina State, Southern Methodist, and Texas-San Antonio.

“This is a chance for the young team to see the level of play necessary to compete in the postseason,” Shelton said. “I’m anxious to see these ladies compete against the best.”

There’s some uncertainty over the top five that Shelton will be able to send out to the course. But the Bucs return reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year Loy Hee Ying (Baru, Kulaijaya, Malaysia).

Loy, now a junior, posted seven top-five finishes last year on the way to one of the best seasons in program history. She won the River Landing Classic and the Brickyard Intercollegiate. At the River Landing, Loy setting a course and tournament record with a 7-under par 65 – the lowest round posted by a SoCon golfer since 2005.

Loy led the SoCon with a 72.11 scoring average and finished 4th in the SoCon Championships in Lexington, S.C. She earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament and came in 30th in the Columbus Regional in May.
