KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 18, 2017) – It took a round for the ETSU women’s golf to get going, but the Bucs finished strongly on the first day of their first tournament of the fall season, the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.

ETSU’s first round score of 309 put it at the back of the 15-team field after the first round at the par-71, 5897-yard Cherokee Country Club. But the Bucs rallied for 290 in the second round, moving up to tie Iowa for 12th.

Hee Ying Loy (Johor, Malaysia), the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, began the day with a 75 in the first round. Playing the back nine first, Loy went three-over before the turn, settled in with a one-over 36 on the homeward leg, then caught fire in her second round.

She dropped in consecutive birdies on 14, 15 and 16 and got back even par on the day with a birdie on the par-3 6th hole. Her three-under 68 in the second round moved her up from 42nd to 22nd on the individual leaderboard.

Tereza Melecka (Belcovice, Czech Republic), making her collegiate debut, stood at even par through her first nine holes the way to a five-over 76 in the first round. The freshman overcame a pair of early bogeys in the second round to post a one-under 70, moving her from 49th to 30th on the leaderboard at +4 146 for the day.

Another Bucs player making her collegiate debut also started slowly but finished well on Monday. Kornbongkoat Sararat (Nongkhai, Thailand) was nine over in the first nine holes of her first round, but went even par on the second nine. The freshman remained steady in Round 2 with an even par 71, advancing from 78th to 58th in the individual standings.

Sophomore Yeji Ahn (Chang Won City, South Korea) shot a 163 (78-85) to tie for 81st. Sophomore Ankita Kedlaya (Bangalore, India) was 85th, at 167 (86-81). Freshman Jordan Handy (Oshkosh, Wis.) posted a 176 (92-84) competing as an unattached player and stands in 86th place.

The third and final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship is scheduled to begin Tuesday morning.
